Starshina first class (Warrant Officer) Lukyan Isaev calmly says, “Captain, the vessel is USS Long Beach. Of that I am certain. Beyond the Long Beach I detect a four-screw vessel. A carrier or battleship. I think a carrier.”

“Good. There will be other surface vessels and likely a submarine. We should see if we may find them.”

“Yes sir.”

Popov says, “Helm, give me a one degree down bubble. Make our new depth 230 meters. Left 10 degrees rudder, come to 165.”

The Helm repeats, “One degree down to 230. Left ten degrees rudder to 165.”

“We begin a game our grandfathers played, but ours is the finest submarine in the sea.”
